First Grade

Grade one Art students become acquainted with a variety of materials and basic art concepts as they create 2- and 3-dimensional work.  Observation, memory and imagination constantly come into play. The curriculum also integrates two Social Studies units studied in the classroom as themes for exploring methods of expression in other cultures.

Grade one students will:
  • Depict themselves in their personal worlds of self, family and community.
  • Paint with tempera and watercolors.
  • Use paper, clay and/or paper mache to create 3-D sculpture.
  • Use pattern, repetition and texture to enhance their artwork.
  • Become familiar with the pinch pot technique of ceramic art.
  • Learn about shape and overlapping through collage.
  • Study and incorporate the designs and methods of the Japanese and Ghanaian cultures.
  • View and discuss the work of artists and craftspeople whose products exemplify the themes and concepts being studied.
